Appendix II. Daniel McAninch’s Land Records, 1796 Purchase and 1797 Sale

Land Purchase, 1796: On Friday, October 14th, 1796, one week after William McAninch’s

marriage (see Appendix I), Daniel McAninch bought 100 acres "of land on the north side" of the

Nolichucky River (spelled Nolachucky in these records), on "a branch of Little Sinking Creek",

for 55 pounds Virginia currency.

Land Sale, 1797: A year later, on Saturday, October 21st, 1797, Daniel McAninch sold this same

100 acres described as "land on the North side of Nolachukey River on Little Sinking Creek" to

Melon Haworth of Greene County, for 60 pounds Virginia currency. [A2 Notes below] [A2-1]

The 1796 land purchase record can be transcribed in multiple parts:

(1st page) Left margin notes: "Conveyance, Jonathan Williams (To) Daniel McAninch 100 acres"

(1st page) Indenture: "This indenture made this 14th day of October in the year of our Lord

one thousand seven hundred and ninety-six between Jonathan Williams of Grainger County

and State of Tennessee of the one part and Daniel McAninch of Greene County [Note A2-5]

and State aforesaid of the other part

Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the sum of Fifty Five pounds Virginia currency [A2-6]

by the said McAninch in hand paid to the said Williams at and (before?) the sealing and delivery

of these presents, the receipt and pay(ment) . . ." (end of this page, bottom right corner is missing)

(2nd page) Left margin notes (top-left corner of page is missing): ". . . of land on the north

side of Nolachukey River" (sic, Nolachukey) (and) "registered in book (letter?) (and) page 43",

and, at the bottom of the column, the single word "Witnesses"

(2nd page) Indenture (continued): ". . . the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said

Williams hath bargained, granted, sold, aliened, enfieffed (sic), conveyed and conferred, and

by these presents doth grant, bargain, sell, alien, enfieff, convey and confirm unto the said

McAninch, his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or parcel of land, containing one hundred

acres in the County of Greene and State aforesaid, on the North side of Nolachukey (sic) River.

Beginning at two maple saplings and two ashes on the side of a branch of Little Sinking Creek,

thence East fifty-four poles to a stake, then North sixty-two poles to a white oak, then east one

hundred and twelve poles to a post oak, then North seventy-seven poles to a stake on Thomas

(unreadable surname, Hunt? Kraft? West?) old line, then west one hundred and sixty-six poles to

a stake on (unreadable names) former tract, then south to the Beginning [Note A2-4] [A2-10]

with the appurtenances situate lying and being as aforesaid, with their and every of their rights,

titles and appurtenances thereunto belonging, likewise all the rights, titles, claims and demands

of him the said Williams hath of, in, or to the said tract or parcel of land, doth hereby grant as
