The Editor’s Corner

Our main feature this month is the Military Pension List, mostly Union veterans of the Civil War,

and a big welcome to Lorna Gilbert, of Houston, Texas, who copied the McAninch entries from

the microfilm records from the National Archives. Lorna’s parents are Harold and Fern L.

(McAninch) Bergdale, and Fern’s parents are Henry James (aka James Henry) McAninch and

Mary A. (aka Anna and Ann Marie) Christensen, who was born in Denmark. Henry’s parents are

Peter McAninch, b. 1841, Armstrong Co., Penn., and Rosa Hill, mar. 29 Jul 1871, Jackson Co.,

Iowa. Peter, and his brother George, are sons of Henry McAninch, b.1800-1801, (?Armstrong Co.)

Penn., and Mary Elizabeth Bowser (her two names on various records), and Henry is believed

to be a son of John McAninch, early Armstrong Co. pioneer.

On-line Forums: There are two on-line surname forums now, Ancestry and GenForum.

The Ancestry Board <http://www.ancestry.com/share/surname/main.asp?surname=McAninch>

has a lot of message traffic, and they have a McNinch board also, but not McIninch (at least,

not yet). At GenForum, the McAninch Forum is at <http://genforum.genealogy.com/mcaninch>,

with links to a McNinch / McIninch forum, and a Macaninch forum, which should be combined

with McAninch.

William and Isabel (Hopkins) McAninch: Appeal for help, to their descendents and researchers,

for information for an article about this early-Pennsylvania couple for a future issue. Among other

issues, who are William’s parents, and when was he was born (1783-1784, per census records, or

1794, on various family group sheets)? A major source for this family is the Henry H. McAninch

biography, Jefferson Co., Penn. Her Pioneers & People, 1800-1915, William James McKnight,

1917, pg 574-575, which implies that they were married in Armstrong County; another descendant

claimed, however, that “Isabel was born in Scotland”, and married “circa 1803”, “near Greensburg”

[Westmoreland County].
