The Editor’s Corner

In October, my wife Jan, cousin Lillian, and I spent three days at the genealogical library run by the LDS (Mormon) Church, Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s the largest genealogical library in the world, and supply center for their network of local Family History Centers around the world. You don’t have to be Mormon to use them (we’re not), and they’re easy to use, if you have access to a local F.H.C. (I know the Mormons aren’t everywhere [yet], and it may be hard to find a local F.H.C. in Pennsylvania or Texas).

Our other big news -- we bought a new computer, Micron (Idaho), Pentium 90(Mhz), with Windows 3.1, Microsoft Word 6.0, and an H-P DeskJet printer (not Windows 95; I’m using Windows NT 3.51 at work, more stable than ‘95). So, there’ll be some format changes in the New Year, as we learn how to use the new features. This issue is actually in Word now, but “old-format”, to avoid having to re-enter and edit the mono-spaced data on the other pages (my first experiment with a proportional font is clearly obvious, below). Also, Lillian, with her new computer, and Jan, with ours, are experimenting with different indexing methods. As you already know, it’s hard to keep all the Daniel’s, George’s, Henry’s, Samuel’s, and William’s straight without a “score-card”, so this effort has two objectives, hoping for a comprehensive index, and for an easy way to maintain and update that index as we go along.

Please send Queries, “New Find” information, Letters to the Editor, or any relevant data for the next issue, to the Editor, by February 1st, 1996. Thanks again for your support, please keep those cards and letters coming.

In the Celtic tradition, as this December issue once again completes our annual cycle, the long night of the Winter solstice suggests completion and closure to A.D. 1995, so, four days after the shortest day of the year ...

Merry Christmas to All, and to all a good night.
