Daniel McAninch, Bedford County, Dublin Township Elections, 1778

(1778) In May, 1778, Daniel was a "freeholder" in Dublin Township, Bedford County

(i.e. a "resident", a married man who owned a tract of land and resided thereon (Note 18.e))

"To the Honerable (sic) the Executive Counsel (sic) Now held in Lanchaster (sic) these are to

Certify that by a Number of freeholders of Bedford County Dublin Township James Carmichael

was Duly Elected and Chosen Candadate (sic) for Said Township as a Justice of the Peace.

Witness our hands this 11th day of May 1778. / P.S. the said Carmichael is Recommended by

Daniel’s son John McAninch born 1778-1780

(1778-1780) Daniel McAninch’s oldest (known) son, John McAninch, was born 1778-1780,

almost certainly in Pennsylvania (Bedford County? or Cumberland County?). John McAninch

would have been 11 or 12 in 1790 (First Census of the United States, Daniel and his family in

Westmoreland County, Penn.), and John would have spent his teen-age years traveling with the

family, through Virginia and eastern Tennessee, arriving in Kentucky ca.1798-1799 [Note 23]

(1779) . . . while the Indians were increasing their incursions into the frontier regions . . . many

of the settlers fled eastward to the relative safety of Cumberland and York Counties [Note 24]

Hamilton Township, north of Peters Township, was created 1751, from Antrim Twp. (1741, from

Hopewell Twp); the land area of Hamilton Township is now part of present-day Franklin County.

(1780-1788) Daniel and Mary (Smith) McAninch could have had more children in this decade

before the 1790 census. Although there are no records of any other children born in Pennsylvania

(sons, daughters, names, birth dates, places, etc.), the Male and Female counts in the 1790 census

indicate that four more people (one male, three females) were enumerated with Daniel in 1790.
