God Bless America

words and music by Irving Berlin [1]

God bless America, one of our unofficial national

anthems, was written by Irving Berlin, an

God bless America, land that I love

immigrant whose family came from Byelorussia

Stand beside her and guide her

to America when he was only five years old.

Through the night with the light from above

It was originally written during the summer

of 1918 at Camp Upton, Yaphank, Long Island,

From the mountains to the prairies

New York, intended for his Ziegfeld-style revue,

To the oceans white with foam

“Yip, Yip, Yaphank”, but not used in that show.

God bless America, my home sweet home

In 1938, as war was again threatening in Europe,

he recalled his “God Bless America” from

From the mountains to the prairies

twenty years earlier, and made some alterations

To the oceans white with foam

to reflect the different state of the world.

God bless America, my home sweet home

Kate Smith introduced the revised song during

God bless America, my home sweet home!

her radio broadcast on Armistice Day, 1938. [2]
