The Editor's Corner

As you'll see on the following pages, a 1946 "McAninch Genealogy" letter has been found in Pennsylvania, which talks about four brothers (not just three brothers)! Harold S. and Marguerite McAninch, of Aurora, Colorado and Sun City, Arizona, have been the big contributors to this issue; the 1946 write-up was originally sent to Harold's father, George S. McAninch, in 1956, sent by Franklin Blair McAninch, Sr., from Martins Ferry, Ohio.

The stories of the "three brothers" come down from their grand-children, published in various Pennsylvania county history books. It has long been my hope (this is my speculation!) that there were actually four (or more) McAninch brothers in early (south‑)western Pennsylvania, circa 1788-1805. If so, and one (or more) of them left the area, their grand-children may only have known about the "three brothers" who remained in the area, and described later in the county history books published in the late 1800's.

Surprisingly, although sent from Martins Ferry, in the Ohio River valley, the 1946 narrative does not establish any obvious connection between the four brothers, in western Pennsylvania, and the large group of McAninches now in the Ohio River valley [the "Ohio / West Virginia" group]. Perhaps someone reading this newsletter can help fill in the missing link(s).

Unfortunately, my comments end on a sad note this month; my only sibling, George Daniel McAninch (November 6, 1947 - February 8, 1995), passed away this month, leaving his wife and daughter, in Bedford (Cleveland), Ohio. Although not a researcher himself, we're all curious about our "McAninch" heritage, and I was just learning to appreciate his adult sense of humor. It's been hard pulling this issue together; George, we miss you, "bro".

Meanwhile, thanks for your support, keep those cards and letters coming.
