Iowa: 1944 Sherman McAninch (1868-1944, Ringgold County, Iowa) |
|
Sherman McAninch was born in Caledonia, Ringgold County, April 18, 1868. When he was twenty years of age he married Mary Jarred. To them came disappointment as their five sons died in infancy but they gave parental love to their two adopted daughters, Mrs. Myrtle Coon of Independence, Missouri, and Mrs. Jennie Swigart of Corvallis, Oregon. While still a young man, Mr. McAninch expressed his faith in the principles taught by the Master and was a charter member of the Ringgold Evangelical Church. On November 7, 1923, four years after the death of his wife Mary, he married Mrs. Lillian Miller. Their sons Joseph Eugene, Charles Sherman and Lester Leroy remain at home. Mr. McAninch was among the many farmers suffering financial reverses during the depression and the strain of caring on his work caused him physical distress. For fifteen years he has been an invalid and for the last nine years has been completely dependent upon his wife and children. They speak of the way he suffered and yet gave no complaint and of his forbearance though he was concerned for fear he would become a burden to them. On the morning of April 24, 1944, he was relieved of the pain and freed from the bondage of a body which was tired and afflicted. |

Among those who think of him today are his wife Lillian; his three sons Joseph, Charles and Lester; four granddaughters, one of whom, Thelma Coon, is a student at Graceland College; two brothers, one twin, Sheridan McAninch of Hill City, Minnesota, and Enoch McAninch of Alliance, Nebraska; and six great-grandchildren. Other relatives and many friends attest to his sincerity of spirit and calm demeanor in the face of life's problems, which at time were heavy for him to bear. |

Joseph F. McAninch, son of Daniel and Phebe (Pike) McAninch, was born 4 Mar. 1845, in Hendricks County, Indiana. He served in the 117th Indiana and 132nd Indiana Infantry units in the Civil War, then married Elizabeth Amy Howerton on 19 Nov. 1868, in Hendricks County. |

Received his pension file recently (NARA, Pension File SC-457-119), and learned that he had moved to Beloit, Mitchell County, Kansas; he died at his residence, at 5th & Poplar, Beloit, on 19 Dec. 1932, and was buried in Rose Valley cemetery, in Mitchell County. |
