Pennsylvania: John McAninch's wife "_____ Jones" may very likely be "Rachel Jones", [the name] mentioned in the "1797 land agreement" -- |

"... included the heretofore-mentioned Joseph Cogley tracts, which was assessed to Nathaniel George in 1805, and respecting which Rachel Jones and John McIninch [sic] entered into a written agreement, August 16, 1797, the substance of which was, that Rachel and John should keep settled for George for five years "a certain tract of land, situate on Slippery Rock path, bounded by James Cogley, Sr., N. 87 E. 343, and by Daniel McClelland, 87 W., 240 perches," to clear and put under fence 8 or more acres, and convey to him the remainder of the tract left after deducting 50 acres containing the improvement to be made by them ..."; |

1. It's speculative, I know, but it's easy to believe that Rachel Jones and John McAninch were (or would soon be) husband-and-wife. |

2. I'm much more curious as to the reason that (a woman) Rachel was mentioned in the "agreement" at all, in that day and age. |

Ulster: index of wills, "1804 M'Ininch, John, Liverpool, mariner", Index to Perogative Wills of Ireland, 1536-1810, ed. by Sir Arthur Friar Vicars, F.S.A., Ulster King of Arms, orig. pub. Dublin, 1897, reprinted Genealogical Pub. Co., Baltimore, 1989. Under English law (Ireland was a colony then), "Perogative" courts handled cases beyond the juridiction of local courts; in this case, my guess is that John comes from Ulster, and, in the course of the shipping trade, died in Liverpool, England. |
