John Samuel Phillips was born 15 Feb. 1776, in Pennsylvania [2], and married Sally (Salome) (Sarah?) Sides (Seitz?). Sally (Salome) was born 16 Sept. 1775 [2], in North Carolina; she died 17 Aug. 1851, and is buried here, in the (Old) Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery. Their marriage bans were announced at Friedland, North Carolina, 4 May 1794 [2]. |

Their daughter, Sarah (Salome) Phillips, was born 29 Sept. 1815, in North Carolina, and she married Elias Grimes in 1843; Elias and Sarah (Phillips) Grimes buried two young daughters in (Old) Pleasant Hill Methodist cemetery (see Grimes section, above). |

Their son, Samuel Phillips, was born 19 May 1808, in Stokes County, North Carolina [2], and married Rachel Newman, who was born 16 Mar. 1818, in Randolph County, North Carolina. Samuel Phillips died in 1880, and his wife Rachel (Newman) Phillips died in 1901; they are both buried in the Amo Cemetery [2] [5b]. |

3. Lewis A. (Albert? Lewis) Phillips, b.1843-1844, married Rosalie Masten; |

4. Samuel Elwood Phillips, born 17 Feb. 1850 [buried in (Old) Pleasant Hill Methodist Cemetery]; |

5. Sallie Marie Phillips, b.ca.1851-1852 (after the 1850 census), married William Shirley; |
|
6. John Nelson Phillips, b.ca.1854-1855, married Joanna Ratcliff; |
|
7. Oliver Perry (“O.P.”) Phillips, b.28 Oct. 1858, married Addie Julia O’Neal, 3 Dec. 1890; and |

8. Emory Ellsworth Phillips, b.1863, married Rosella Justice; Emory and Rosella are the parents of Holiday Chauncey Phillips (1894-1983) [see Note 1, “Phillips Estate” papers, and Appendix 1]. |
