Postmasters McA/I/Nin(ch/sh) 1832-1971

Seventeen different McA/I/Nin(ch/sh) people have served as Postmasters in the U.S. Post Office

between 1832 and 1971, in the 100 years from 1870 (Samuel W. McAninch, Mount Meridian,

Putnam County, Indiana, 1870-1871) into the 20th century (Ethridge Lee McAninch, Mintonville,

Casey County, Kentucky, 1961-1970), across ten different states (Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky,

Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, and West Virginia).

And, for eleven of these McA/I/Nin(ch/sh) people, it was a family affair:

three brothers Milton C., Samuel W., and William A. McAninch in Putnam County, Indiana;

mother and daughter, Victoria (Tucker) McAninch/McAnish (wife of Stewart L. McAninch

/McAnish) in Bristol, Nevada, and their daughter Emma Victoria McAnish in Oregon;

father and son, Charles P. McIninch in the Indian Territory and James M. McIninch in Oklahoma;

two brothers, Fred A. and Harry W. McNinch in West Virginia; and

uncle and nephew, George T. McAninch and (Ethridge) Lee McAninch in Casey Co., Kentucky.

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the

 swift completion of their appointed rounds", on the James Farley Post Office in New York City.

The inscription was added by the building architect, William Mitchell Kendall, derived from a

quote from Herodotus' Histories, referring to the courier service of the ancient Persian Empire.
