the birth years are not an exact match, but it was common for the census enumerators

to mark the father and mother in the last column ‘45 & Over’, and this is the correct family

Henry McAninch’s marker, James Cemetery, Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio [Note 15.a.]

      "HENRY McANINCH"

[raised small letter 'c' with two dots, Note 15.b.]

    "DIED" / [S]"EP. 28, 1856"

[capital letter 'S' is lost in the crack, Note 15.c.]

"AGED" / "79 YRS. 4 MO. 13 DS"

[and calculate Henry’s date of birth, Note 15.d.]

a.

this is my transcription of Anthony Coyan's picture of the 1856 gravestone

b.

the 'c' on the marker is a raised small c with two dots under it, which is a common

American form of the Gaelic 'macron' (i.e. missing vowel), which originally put

a short line above the 'c' [when the three letters 'M’a’c' became 'M' ’macron/c'],

and later shown with either a short line below the ‘c’, or two dots below the 'c'

c.

date of death is probably '28 Sept. 1856'; the 'S' is lost in the crack, but month and

year 'Sept. 1856' agree with the '24 Sept. 1856' date reported earlier by Liz Watson

d.

and, calculating backwards, the death date and age imply a May 15th date of birth
