The Editor’s Corner

In 1803, Ireland was a British colony, and the British feared that Napoleon Bonaparte in France

was planning to conquer Europe and the United Kingdom, so, the military defense officers wanted

lists of householders, their sons available for yeomanry service, and an inventory of livestock,

provisions and equipment. Rev. Robert Trail, the Rector of Ballintoy Parish, County Antrim,

visited every townland in his parish in the spring of 1803, and recorded each family in the

Ballintoy Parish Vestry Book. There are twelve families in Ballintoy parish with McA/I/Ninch

family members in March 1803, although Rev. Trail recorded all of these people as “M’Ininch”

(of course, Ballintoy Parish is part of County Antrim, and the ‘head of household’s also appear

on the 1803 Agricultural Census of the entire county, MFHN v.VIII n.3 July 2000 p.2000-19,20)

And the ‘Timeline’ article attempts to bring together a comprehensive list of McA/I/Ninch events

in northern Ireland, along with a few of the significant dates and events in the history of the Celts,

Dalriada on the northern coast of Ireland and the ‘Scotti’, the highland Clan MacInnes, and the

Ulster Scots in County Antrim. The Timeline article includes the birth years of our McA/Ininch

ancestors who came to North America (Pennsylvania, before the American Revolution, and later

Rhode Island, in the United States, and to Ontario, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia in Canada).
