Mayan 'Long Count' Continues, Next b’ak’tun Starts in December 2012

December 2012 marks the conclusion of another b’ak’tun (almost 400 years) in the Mesoamerican

Long Count calendar which was used in Central America prior to the arrival of Europeans. Probably

invented earlier by the Olmec, the Long Count is now associated with the Maya civilization, and it

is still used in parts of Guatemala and Mexico today [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maya_calendar].

Mayan numbers were essentially vigesimal (i.e., base-20). The Maya name for a day was k’in.

Twenty k’ins are known as a winal or uinal. Eighteen winals make one tun. The Maya Haab’ was

their solar year, with eighteen months of twenty days each, plus five days ("nameless days") at the

end of the year known as Uayeb. In the Maya Long Count (which is independent of the solar year),

twenty tuns are known as a k’atun, and twenty k’atuns make a b’ak’tun ([144,000 days, 394.3 years).

‘Long Count’ dates record the number of days from the Mayan creation (August 11, 3114 BC in the

proleptic Gregorian calendar), in a modified base-20 notation. December 21 (or 23), 2012, is the day

that the Mayan calendar rolls over to the next b'ak'tun, at Long Count 13.0.0.0.0, and it will move on

to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b'ak'tuns), at Long Count 1.0.0.0.0.0, on October 13, 4772.
