Stewart McAninch in Nevada, 1883 to 1899, and then Stewart McAnish in Oregon

The Editor’s Corner

We close out the story of Stewart McAninch in Nevada with the ‘Part II’ article this month.

We now know that this Stewart was an immigrant from Ireland, possibly via Pennsylvania, and

later, when they left Nevada in 1899, he took his family north-west to the eastern part of Oregon.

Seems a little anticlimactic to find him in Oregon later, 1900 to 1930, with the McAnish spelling.

As far as is known now, Stewart was the first McAninch in Nevada, and it has been interesting

to follow his journey through the Silver State. Today, U.S. 50 across central Nevada is known as

the “loneliest highway in America”, and we can only imagine what it was like in Stewart’s day.

In the beginning, I thought that Stewart’s son “John S.” (b.1893, White River, Nevada) might be

one of two different people in later Nevada census records (Nevada 1900, 1910 census, MFHN

v.XI.n.4 October 2003 p.2003-29), either John (Humboldt County, 1900 and 1910), or James M.

(Manhattan, Nye County, Nevada, in 1910), but it is clear now that these are three different men.

Will have more on John S. McAninch and James M. McAninch in Nevada stories in future issues.
