United Kingdom: 1780 (Kingdom of Great Britain, from the Acts of Union, 1707, to 1800)

American Prisoners of the Revolution: New York was a Loyalist town during the Revolution.

The British used the ships at Wallabout Bay, in the East River, and later the site of the

Brooklyn Navy Yard, for naval prisoners on this side of the Atlantic. The prisoners included

men captured on American privateers, merchant ships, French, Spanish, and Dutch vessels.

After April 1780, the Jersey was the receiving ship where names were entered into records.

The list includes both “John McNish” and "John McNauch", and they are the only names

on the list which match our phonetic pattern 'Mac' 'N' ~ ('ch'/'sh').

Original: List Of 8000 Men Who Were Prisoners On Board The Old Jersey

List compiled by 'The Society Of Old Brooklynites' in 1888.

“This list of names was copied from the papers of the British War Department. There is

nothing to indicate what became of any of these prisoners, whether they died, escaped, or

were exchanged. The list seems to have been carelessly kept, and is full of obvious mistakes

in spelling the names. Yet it shall be given just as it is, except that the names are arranged

differently, for easier reference. This list of prisoners is the only one that could be found in

the British War Department. What became of the lists of prisoners on the many other prison

ships, and prisons, used by the English in America, we do not know.”
