**

McColgan: The McColgans are an Irish family from county Derry, on the

West Side of the County, and therefore very close to the origins of the

McAninsch [sic] family which originate in Donegal County on the East side,

not too far from the border with Derry County.

*

MacMillan: is a Scots clan, generally associated with Argyllshire.

McAninch is an Irish family, but was for a generation in Scotland before

emigrating to Canada. (Working in the coal mines at Campsie).

Notes and Sources:

[1]

One page, typed on letterhead, no signature; received a copy of this page in

July, 1993, from another McAninch researcher, although neither of us are

connected to this Michael McAninch / Hugh McAninch / John McAninch line.

[2]

“the late H. Rokeby-Thomas was my grandfather's brother-in-law”, and

“Hugh McAninch and family appear in both the 1851 and 1861 Scottish

census; in 1861, his occupation is listed as a limestone (not coal) miner.

The migration to Canada took place in 1863. Hugh's sister ‘Eliza’ migrated

to the same area (timing unknown) and was married to [William] Colwell.

In addition to son John, Hugh had a daughter (Elizabeth/Lizzie, also born in

Scotland) who married [George] Calloway. I don't know of any other issue to

either Hugh & Ann or to Michael & Ann” Iain Rosszell, email, 1 Aug. 2007

Although “Rosszell” is the current spelling, “Roszell” was correct at that time.
