California: 1947, 1976, 1991, Mt. Hope Cemetery, San Diego

Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego, California, is a large cemetery owned and maintained by

the City of San Diego [1]. The City opened Mt. Hope cemetery in 1871, in the hills just east of

downtown; today, the city has grown around the cemetery, and far beyond the residential area

of the Mt. Hope neighborhood. Throughout the years, original portions of Mt. Hope Cemetery

have been combined with other burial areas originally designated for the International Order of

Foresters, Masonic Lodge, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), Fraternal Order of Eagles, and

others. The combined cemetery now has a total of 110 usable acres, only 80 acres are in use at

this time, with over 76,000 internments made.
