[14] Canada West was the name of the jurisdiction which became the province of Ontario on

1 July 1867 when Canada federated. The British colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada

were united in 1840 to form one colony named “Canada”, but for administrative purposes the

colony was divided along the old Upper/Lower boundaries and the two parts were, respectively,

called Canada West and Canada East.

 

[15] 1871 Census of Canada, Ontario, Hastings, Rawdon, p. 11: “Robert McIninch, age 78,

born in Ireland, Church of England, farmer; Elisabeth McIninch, age 78, born in Ireland,

Church of England; Robert McIninch, age 30, born in Ireland, Church of England, farmer;

Patrick McIninch, age 28, born in Ireland, Church of England, farmer; John McIninch, age 25,

born in Ireland, Church of England, carpenter.”

 

[16] In the Ontario head-of-household index to the 1871 Census of Canada, Henry is listed as

a blacksmith living in Belleville Town: “Henery McInninck [the “h” was likely mistranscribed

as a “k” by the indexer], age: 31, birthplace: Ontario [incorrect], religion: Wesleyan Methodist

[incorrect], origin: Irish, occupation: blacksmith.”

 

[17] 1881 Census of Canada, Ontario, Hastings West, Belleville, District No. 121, p. 25:

“Henry McAninch [spelled with an ‘A’], age 40, born in Ireland, Church of England, blacksmith;

Maggie McAninch; age 36, born in Ireland, Roman Catholic; Robert H. McAninch, age 10,

born in Ontario, Roman Catholic; William J. McAninch, age 7, born in Ontario, Roman Catholic;

Mary F. McAninch, age 2, born in Ontario, Roman Catholic.”

 

[18] 1881 Census of Canada, Ontario, Hastings North, Rawdon Township, Division No. 1, p. 18:

“Patrick McIninch, age 45, born in Ireland, Church of England, farmer, Irish; Mary McIninch,

age 22, born in Ontario, Church of England, French; Jane McIninch, age 3, born in Ontario,

Church of England, Irish; Elisabeth McIninch [nee Colgon], age 88, born in Ireland, Church of

England, widow, Irish; John McIninch, age 35, born in Ireland, Church of England, farmer, Irish.”

Harry is said to be a plumber, and William, an engine fitter.  Mabel, the only child of Henry

and Margaret born after the previous census, is said to be 7 years old.
