He was united in marriage to Mariah Case November 9th, 1870. To this union were born twelve

children, all of whom, with one exception, grew to womanhood and manhood in this county. Of these

eleven children, ten live to morn the loss of their father. His wife and daughter Mary Elizabeth

preceded him in death some years ago. Those remaining are Mrs. Manara Campbell, Hamburg, Iowa;

Clark and Joseph of Neodesha, Kansas; Mrs. Anna Clark of Ethridge, Montana; Mrs. Arminta

Hoaglin of Vancouver, Washing-ton; Mrs. Faye Nauman of Des Moines, Iowa; Mrs. Adda Shidler,

Mrs. Charles Wroughton, Oscar and Ebon, all of this county. Besides these children he has 46

grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, five brothers and one sister surviving him.

Mr. McAninch was one of the early residents of this county having lived here some 62 years and has

been acquainted with the growth of community and the county. He was an active worker in the church

during his early life and by his living set an example for his children that he has never had reasons to

regret and of which they are justly proud. His friends were numbered by his acquaintances. He has

fought a good fight and he has kept the faith. At last victory is his. We have lost and he has won.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 at the Ringgold City Church, being conducted by

Rev. Jay Kirkendall, pastor of the Mount Ayr Methodist Church assisted by Rev. J. R. Nolte, pastor of

Iowa: 1959 – Lillian (Swift, Miller) McAninch, third wife of Sherman McAninch

Lillian Swift, daughter of Joseph A. and Maria T. Swift, was born June 6, 1891, at St. Louis,

Missouri, and departed this life on July 28, 1959, at the Decatur county hospital, Leon, at the age

of 68 years, 1 month and 22 days. Lillian was of a family of 10 children. Her father, mother, sisters,

and brother, with one exception, preceded her in death. One sister of the family survives ..

On May 19, 1906, she was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day

Saints, by Elder Samuel A. Burgess, she being the first person he baptized. She was confirmed by

Elder Fred A. Smith. This occurred in St. Louis. The family moved from St. Louis to Pleasanton,

Iowa, where she worked for her uncle in a store and restaurant.

She was married to Pierce Miller on July 28, 1917, whose death occurred four years later in 1921.

On November 7, 1923, she was united in marriage to Sherman McAninch, and they took up

residence on a farm in the Bloomington Center neighborhood northwest of Lamoni. Three sons

were born to them: Joseph E. McAninch of Omaha, Nebraska; Charles S. McAninch of Kansas City,

Missouri; and Lester L. McAninch of Long Beach, California. The family lived on the farm until

Mrs. McAninch's health failed, and they moved to Lamoni in 1935. He passed away April 24, 1944.

Besides the three sons and the sister who survive her, there are … eight grandchildren; two

step-daughters, Mrs. Roy Swigart, Corvallis, Oregon, and Mrs. Myrtle Coon, Independence, Missouri;

also three step-grandchildren, a number of nieces, nephews and many friends.

For the past several years Lillian has worked in the restaurants of our town, where she gave of the

best of herself, and endeared herself to her fellow workers. She also spent much of her time working

for and helping the sick and those in need, many times when hardly physically strong enough to do so.

Funeral services were conducted at the Marsh Funeral chapel Thursday at 2 p.m. with Elder Morton

Edmunds and Joe Hoffman in charge. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery.
