Two Testimonials for 19th-Century Medicine:

Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, 1869 –

“I, John McAninch, have been positively deaf in my right ear: could not hear a watch tick when placed close to my ear, or any sound. On hearing of Dr. McKnight I called on him this day, and in FIFTEEN MINUTES operation by the Doctor on my ear, I now can hear a watch perfectly, and really as well as ever. I make this statement for the benefit of the afflicted. I am fifty years old. Deafness of three years standing. John McAninch”

[and Notarized!] Punxsutawney, Pa., May 15, 1869 / Jefferson County, ss.

“John McAninch, above named, personally appeared and being duly sworn, saith the above statements are true and correct in every particular. Sworn and subscribed to May 15. 69. J. A. Minish, J.P.”

From the Indiana Messenger (Indiana, Pennsylvania), 28 July 1869, pg.3; found by Richard Cochran, Big Rapids, Michigan; not only is this statement notarized, but John McAninch attests to his own age.

Cass County, Missouri, 1878 --

Mrs. Margaret McAninch, a lady of Pleasant Hill, blind in one eye for ten years and the other covered by hard cataract, has been restored to sight in both eyes by Dr. Evans of this city. The operation was a complete success.”

From the Sedalia (Missouri) Daily Democrat, Sunday Morning, March 31, 1878, pg.4 col.2; found by Leslie Saylor, Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin.

Were these promotional endorsements in the newspapers, probably funded by the Doctors involved?
