The 16th Missouri Infantry, C.S.A., was commanded by Col. Sidney Drake Jackman, Col. Josiah H. Caldwell, Col. Levin M. Lewis, Lt. Col. Pleasant W. H. Cumming, and Lt. Col. Jesse P. Herrell. It was organized Aug. 31, 1862, as the 7th Missouri Infantry, and re-designated as the 16th Missouri Infantry on April 1, 1863 [Note Mo-18], and fought at the following engagements: Battle of Helena [July 4, 1863, Helena, Arkansas (Gn-10)], Red River Campaign [Indian Territory, now Oklahoma], Battle of Pleasant Hill [April 9, 1864, Louisiana], and Jenkins' Ferry [April 30, 1864, Arkansas]. It surrendered on May 26, 1865, under Gen. E. Kirby Smith's Department of Trans-Mississippi.

However, Martin left the 16th Inf. on March 20, 1863, at Little Rock (“M. McAninch, Pvt., Co. A, [Capt] Lewis, 16 Reg’t Mo., appears on a record of officers and soldiers who have ceased to belong to Parson’s Brigade, Mo. Vols.”) [Mo-17], and the last entry in his file, from list dated Jan. 26, 1864, states that he is “now with the cavalry” named “Jarretts Co. Quantrill’s com” [command]; apparently, Martin was now riding with his older brother in the same unit [John Jarrett, 10th Regiment Cavalry]; Unfortunately, the unit muster card records do not show either man [Notes Mo-11, Mo-12].

After the Civil War, David Humphrey McAninch, older brother of (Wm.) Harry and Martin, got land in northern California [Note Mo-19], and Martin went to California also. In 1870, both are listed as “stock raisers”, both born Kentucky [Mo-13]; Martin married Alfonzo [sic] Williams, 11 Dec. 1873, Mendocino Co., California. There are multiple records of both men in California, including the 1910 ‘Great Register’ of voters in Mendocino County, which lists “McAninch, David Humphrey” as a Rancher in Long Valley, and “McAninch, Martin Van Buren” [sic] as a Farmer near Willits [Mo-23]. No records of their deaths or burials have been found (yet).
