Elizabeth Jackson 5; all born in Pennsylvania, and all living in Iowa 2 years;

4. Civil War -- sons Peter McAninch and George McAninch both served in Iowa units

 

a. Peter McAninch, born 25 Jan 1841, Pennsylvania, enlisted 8 August 1862, Co. I, 31st Iowa Vol. Inf., at Andrew, Iowa; promoted to “wagoner” on 20 Nov. 1862, mustered out 27 June 1865, at Louisville, Kentucky. At the time he enlisted, he gave his residence as Spring Brook, Iowa; age 22; birthplace, Pennsylvania. He married Eliza Curey, 24 Feb. 1869, Jackson Co., Iowa, but she died in 1870, after the birth of their son Sherman. He married (2) Rosa Hills, 29 July 1871, Jackson Co.; Peter and Rosa had four children (Harvey, Vinetta, Henry James, and Alice); they went west to Harwarden, Sioux Co., Iowa, and Peter died there, 10 Jun 1922.

 

b. George McAninch, b. 17 Feb. 1843, Pennsylvania, enrolled 24 Sept. 1864, Co. B, 15th Reg’t, Iowa Infantry, age 21, residence Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa; mustered out Washington, DC, 15 May 1865. He married Mary Watson, 24 Dec. 1869, Jackson Co., Iowa; they had seven children (Effie, Frank, Melda [Mildred], Jesse, Maline J. [sp?], John, and Floyd); later, this family also moved west to Harwarden, Sioux Co., Iowa, and George died there, 20 Dec. 1928.

 

5. Iowa, 1925 – There was a 1925 state census in Iowa, with lots of genealogical info. In addition to the usual census data (name, sex, age, relationship), this census asked for specific information on the parents, including their names (with maiden name), birthplaces, and where they were married.

 

George McAninch, Civil War veteran, can be found in Sioux County, with three generations in this census. George gives his parents’ names as “Henry McAninch” and “Mary Bowser” [Note 5]
