Palm of Red Hand faces viewer. Thumb on viewer's right. Also known as the Boody Hand. The Red Hand of the O’Niells. The Red Hand of Ulster. The Red Hand of Ireland.

Traditional Flag of Northern Ireland shows a red cross on a white flag. Six-point solid white star in the center of the cross displays the Red Hand of Ulster. Crown surmounts the star.

Shield of Ulster. Gold shield. Red Cross. White shield in center of red cross. Bloody hand in center of shield. First used on shield by Aedh O'Oneill, King of Ulster in the mid 14th century. Scholars suggest hand represents the inner family, Derbfine. The wrist represents the king or chief. The palm stands for his sons. The fingers, his grandsons, from whom a successor would be chosen.

Scotch-Irish -- the term "Scotch-Irish" was used by the Scottish Universities for Scotch students from Ireland. Their Scottish character was fully recognized but they were from Ireland so they were registered as Scoto-Hibernus. [clipped from Scotch-Irish-L, www.rootsweb.com]

Hadrian's Wall, ancient Roman stone and masonry wall, constructed to protect the northern boundary of Roman Britain against hostile tribes. Emperor Hadrian of Rome ordered its construction around AD 122. The wall extended 117 km (73 mi) from Solway Firth to the mouth of the Tyne River, and was about 6 m (about 20 ft) high and about 2.4 m (about 8 ft) wide. A military road ran along the south side of the wall, and a series of heavily garrisoned forts and sentry posts were built along its length. The wall also marked the frontier of Roman civil jurisdiction. A few sections of Hadrian's Wall remain standing in present-day Great Britain.
