II. The Indiana Civil War Volunteers resource

 

“The State Archives maintains an alphabetical list of all the soldiers who served in Indiana

volunteer regiments (infantry and cavalry) and artillery batteries. The list, a card file, was prepared

by the W.P.A. in the late 1930’s, employing the original muster rolls of the Indiana volunteer units

found in the Indiana State Archives… The card file has been microfilmed.” [Notes 1, 4]

 

In the Indiana State Archives, there are seven card records, for six different McAninch men [Note 4].

 

First, two Putnam County men, in the 78th Indiana (vs. “77” on ‘first list’, 1862, above) [Notes 13, 14]

 

1. McAninch, Jno. W., Pvt., Co. B, 78th Reg’t, 60 days; [Enrolled] Aug. 4, 1862, at Stilesville,

by Capt. Lee; [Muster In] 11-5-62, at Indianapolis, by Lt. Marsh [Age] 20 No Muster Out Roll

[78th Indiana, 60 day State unit, at Indianapolis, Aug. 5, 1862, mustered out Oct. 3, 1862. Note 14]

 

2a. McAninch, Milton C., Pvt., Co. C [G?], 78th Reg’t, 60 days; [Enr’d] Aug. 4, 1862, at Stilesville,

by Capt. Lee; [Muster In] 11-5-62, at Indianapolis, by Lt. Marsh [Age] 18 No Muster Out Roll

 

And another Milton record, in a later unit, the 133rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry, 1864 [Note 19]

 

2b. McAninch, Milton C., Co. __, 133 Reg’t [not 103rd /fm]; 100 days [this service card hard to

read]; [Enrolled] Jnr [sic, January?] 27 - [18]64, at Terre Haute, Ind., by Capt. Smith; [Muster In]

May 17, 1864, at Indianapolis, by Capt. Farquarhar [sp?] [Age] 20 No Muster Out Roll

 

Second, there were two different Joseph McAninch’s (Joseph F. McAninch, age 18, July 1863,

and Joseph [P.?] McAninch, age 43, Feb. 1865). According to the 1885 county history book

(section IV, below), one of these Joseph McAninch’s also served in another unit, 132nd Indiana

Volunteer Infantry, 1864 [Note 18]

 

3. McAninch, Joseph [F.], Pvt., Co. B, 117th Reg’t, 6 months; [Enrolled] July ’63, at Springtown,

Ind. [Hendricks Co.], by Lt. Marshall; [Age] 18; [Mustered Out] Indianapolis, Feb. 2_[?], 1864

 

4. McAninch, Joseph [P.?], Pvt., Co. B, 148th Reg’t., 180 days; [Enrolled] Feb. 7, 1865, at

Indianapolis, by J. H. McClure[?]; [Muster] Feb. 7, 1865, at Indianapolis, by Capt. Brad~rd [sp?]

[Age] 43 [Eyes] Grey [Hair] Dark [Height] 5-11 [Complexion] Dark [Nativity] Kentucky [Occ.]

Farmer [Mustered Out] at Nashville, Tenn., Sept. 5, 1865; “app’t corp. Feb. 25, 1865”

 

And two other McAninch records, including William S. McAninch, from Hendricks County –

And Sylvester Danley McAninch, Porter County, northern Indiana [“Two Units, Two States”, Note 17]

[Ind.], by [blank]; [Muster In] Jan. 12, -[18]64, at Michigan City, by Capt. Thatcher; [Age] 17
